Sam Roy, Occupational Therapist

 Hi, I’m Sam (she/her) -- I’m so glad you’re here!

I'm a registered occupational therapist with a passion for supporting women through pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood.

Occupational therapy in maternal health is about helping mothers navigate the changes that come with this season of life so they can participate more fully in the people, places, and activities that matter most.

As a mom of two, my own transition into motherhood deepened my appreciation for just how much everyday life changes after my baby was welcomed home. I found myself asking the same questions many mothers do: “Why does everything suddenly feel so much harder?” “Why do I feel so unlike myself?” “How do I get back to things that make me feel like ‘me’?” “Why is there so little support focused on mom?” “How do I balance my baby’s needs with my own?”

That experience, along with my clinical background supporting people through major life transitions and mental health, inspired me to bring an occupational therapy lens to maternal health.

Today, I'm passionate about supporting mothers who may be experiencing:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by the mental load

  • Difficulty finding routines that work

  • Changes in identity and sense of self

  • Pain, fatigue, or challenges participating in daily life

  • Returning to exercise, work, hobbies, or social activities

  • Difficulty finding balance while caring for everyone else

When I'm not working, you'll usually find me chasing my two boys with my husband, walking our dog with a coffee in hand, at CrossFit or out for a run, reading, or connecting with friends.

My Approach

I believe there is no one "right" way to experience motherhood.

Every mother, every family, and every transition is different. The challenges you face are shaped by your unique experiences, supports, environment, health, values, and the many roles you hold.

As women move through matrescence—the profound developmental transition into motherhood—it is common to experience physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and identity changes that can make everyday life feel very different than it once did.

My role is to understand what's getting in the way of the life you want to live and work alongside you to find practical, evidence-informed strategies that support your goals. Together, we'll explore how your health, environment, and daily responsibilities interact, and create realistic solutions that fit your life.

Interventions may include:

  • Building sustainable routines

    • Creating balanced routines that support both you and your family

    • Developing realistic sleep habits and daily rhythms

    • Re-establishing occupational balance

  • Returning to what matters

    • Graded return to exercise, work, hobbies, and community activities

    • Reconnecting with your identity and meaningful activities

    • Return-to-work planning and preparation

  • Making everyday life more manageable

    • Task and home adaptations

    • Energy, pain, and fatigue management

    • Ergonomic and equipment recommendations

    • Cognitive strategies for mental load and "mom brain"

  • Navigating change

    • Practical coping strategies for stress, overwhelm, and mood

    • Building confidence through small, sustainable behavioural changes

Above all, I hope to create a space where you feel heard, supported, and understood. My goal is to help you build a version of motherhood that feels authentic to you since when mothers are supported, families thrive.
