MyoFunctional Therapy
Breathe better, Sleep deeper, Function Fully
Myofunctional therapy is now offered at Echo Wellness Collective — a natural, exercise-based approach to correcting how the muscles of the mouth, tongue, and throat work together, so breathing, sleep, swallowing, and speech can finally work the way they're meant to.
Does this sound familiar?
Mouth breathing. Snoring. Trouble falling — or staying — asleep. A jaw that feels tight or tired by the end of the day. A toddler who's still thumb sucking, a picky eater who struggles with certain textures, or a tongue tie release that didn't fully resolve.
These aren't separate problems. More often than not, they share the same root cause: the muscles of the face, mouth, and throat aren't functioning the way they should.
That's where myofunctional therapy comes in.
What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Think of it as physical therapy for the tongue, mouth, and throat.
Myofunctional therapy uses targeted, progressive exercises to retrain oral and facial muscle patterns — how the tongue rests, how you breathe, how you swallow. Instead of just managing symptoms, it addresses the habits and muscle patterns underneath them, building new, healthier patterns that hold up for the long term.
It's a natural fit alongside the nervous-system-focused care we already provide. Breathing pattern, tongue posture, and jaw tension are all deeply connected to how the nervous system regulates — a body that's breathing efficiently through the nose, with a tongue resting where it should, is a body that's better able to settle, sleep, and self-regulate. Myofunctional therapy and nervous system care aren't two separate systems — they're two entry points into the same story.
And the numbers back up how common this actually is: an estimated 38% of adults are habitual mouth breathers, and 75% of children with sleep issues show signs of orofacial dysfunction.

Our Programs
Teaching the tongue where it's actually supposed to rest. This foundational piece supports facial development, airway function, and dental alignment for kids and adults alike.
Retraining the shift from mouth breathing to full, efficient nasal breathing — supporting better sleep, more daytime energy, and a healthier airway overall.
Age-appropriate, genuinely fun exercises for kids ages 4 and up working through thumb sucking, mouth breathing, picky eating, or early speech concerns — with parent coaching built into every session.
Correcting tongue thrust and improper swallow patterns that can quietly affect dental health, digestion, and speech clarity over time.
Preparation before a tongue or lip tie release, and guided rehabilitation after, to help the whole family get the most out of the procedure.
Strengthening the muscles that keep the airway open overnight — a strong complement to any existing dental or medical sleep treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
It's a structured program of exercises that retrains the muscles of the face, tongue, and throat — addressing root causes like mouth breathing, poor tongue posture, tongue thrust, and jaw tension rather than just the symptoms they cause.
-
Children as young as 4 can begin, depending on their ability to follow along with exercises. If your child is younger than that, our team can still help identify early signs of orofacial dysfunction during regular visits and let you know when the timing is right to start myofunctional therapy.
-
No — it works alongside one. Myofunctional therapy prepares the muscles before a release and supports proper healing and function afterward, which is often the difference between a release that "took" and one that didn't fully resolve.
-
Breathing and oral-motor function are closely tied to nervous system regulation. Many families come to us for chiropractic or nervous system-focused care and discover myofunctional therapy addresses a piece of the puzzle they didn't know was connected — and vice versa.
-
Myofunctional therapy is often covered through Health Spending Accounts and some extended dental plans. The CDHA and CDHO are actively working toward the inclusion of myofunctional therapy services, in a broader range of dental benefit plans, including the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).
